Bummer and Lazarus: A Dog Musical is an upbeat and loving tribute to San Francisco's most iconic dogs. This hour-long children's musical is fun for the whole family and will have you humming (or barking) along with the score.

Unlike modern-day San Francisco, famed for its love of pets, the city in 1861 was no place for dogs, making Bummer and Lazarus’s fame even more unlikely.

Stray dogs outnumbered people by nearly two to one and the newspapers declared they had "never [known] a city in America so cursed with the canine nuisance." Many citizens took it upon themselves to reduce the population and the city pounds reported record numbers every month.
Attitudes began to shift when Bummer, a scruffy Newfoundland mix, established himself as an accomplished rat hunter outside of Martin's Saloon on Montgomery Street. His popularity only increased after reports that he rescued a badly injured dog from an uneven fight and nursed him back to health. The dog who made this miraculous recovery was dubbed Lazarus, and their misadventures were fondly documented by local newspapermen in search of feel-good stories.
